In our Te Rūma Kiwi, we believe that the early years are a precious time of wonder, discovery, connection and growth. We offer a warm, calm and nurturing place where every child is welcomed, valued and supported to develop a strong sense of belonging.
We have a passionate and enthusiastic team of kaiako who genuinely care about getting to know each child and creating meaningful, trusting relationships. Our practice is grounded in respectful interactions, reciprocal relationships and consistent and responsive care. We take the time to understand each child as an individual – their personality, interests, strengths, culture, routines, cues and unique ways of communicating.
Our programme is based on primary caregiving, supporting tamariki to develop secure and trusting relationships with familiar kaiako. These strong relationships help children feel safe, confident and comfortable in their environment, providing a secure foundation from which they can explore, play, learn and grow.
We understand that starting preschool is a big step for both young children and their whānau. We work closely alongside parents and whānau to understand each child’s individual needs and, wherever possible, ensure that their caregiving rituals at preschool are familiar and responsive to what they experience at home. We value the knowledge and aspirations that whānau bring and see these partnerships as an important part of supporting each child to thrive.
Our environment is intentionally designed for our youngest learners, catering for tamariki from five months to three years. We provide a calm and inviting space with a balance of comfort, curiosity and challenge. Children are encouraged to explore at their own pace, with opportunities to create, discover, move, problem-solve, connect with nature, engage in sensory experiences, develop independence and build relationships with others.
Every day brings opportunities for learning through play. Whether it is getting messy with creative experiences, discovering something new outdoors, moving to music, sharing a story, exploring a physical challenge or simply enjoying a quiet moment of connection with a trusted kaiako, we value the learning that happens in all of these everyday moments.
Our curriculum is grounded in Te Whāriki and enriched by our own local curriculum, reflecting the values, learning dispositions and aspirations that are important to our Phoenix community. We believe children learn best when they feel secure, respected and genuinely interested in what they are doing.
Above all, we want Phoenix to feel like a home away from home – a place where children are known, understood, comforted, listened to, encouraged and celebrated. A place where they can be themselves, develop confidence, build secure relationships and grow in their own time.
